Mobilization: my journey from civilian to serviceman – July 30, 2024 Day fifty-four. Training day 11. Shooting with an AKM

Today was shooting day. We shot first from a distance of 25 meters, then from a distance of 100 meters.

I am sincerely grateful for the help of my wife and friends. They ordered special glasses for me. They were specially designed, with prescription glasses inside and protective glasses outside.

If I didn’t have these glasses, I wouldn’t have been able to participate in the shooting.

At first, we were each given 40 rounds of ammunition. We loaded our four magazines, 10 rounds in each. We took up positions 25 meters away.

An important point was the strict emphasis of the instructors. They said that if we missed the target, they would continue to train us and work with us. But if we violated the safety rules, we would be disqualified and would not be able to participate in the shooting.

Here are the basic rules for handling weapons:

  1. Always treat the weapon as if it were loaded.
  2. Do not point the weapon where you do not intend to shoot.
  3. Only put your finger on the trigger when you are ready to fire.
  4. Always control the space in front of and behind the target.
  5. Never leave your weapon unattended.

We began the briefing on how the process would take place once again. We loaded the magazines with live ammunition, inserted a cartridge into the chamber, and put the safety on. We took up the necessary position. We switched to single-shot mode and began shooting.

We also put on earplugs or special headphones 🙂

The first two times we shoot lying down. Two rounds of 10 rounds each. After each round, we ran to our target and looked at how we hit it.

After the first round, I saw only one pretty good hit, almost in the bull’s-eye, and that was it. That made me a little sad. My neighbor on the left, on the contrary, had a lot of hits.

They said he had one of the best results. I thought, “Okay, let’s get it together, I’ll do better and I’ll definitely hit the target.”

We took another 10 shots lying down and… When we went to check the number of hits, I didn’t have a single hit. This depressed me, I felt like I was clumsy.

Then one of the instructors noticed that my neighbor on the left had 15 hits. How could someone make 15 hits with 10 cartridges? Then we realized that I was just aiming at the wrong target :).

After that, we had sitting shooting. I was already shooting at my target and had a pretty good hit rate. I calmed down with relief — everything was fine with me.

Then we shot while standing. It was noticeably more difficult to shoot while standing. After 10-15 seconds, I felt my aim start to waver. That’s why I only hit the target 3 times. But for the first time, it was more or less normal.

Then we moved to a longer distance, 100 meters. We were given another 30 rounds and loaded three more magazines, 10 rounds in each.

After that, we shot lying down, sitting, and standing at targets 100 meters away. After that, each of us looked at the results and even had the opportunity to keep a sheet with the target as a souvenir. I had about a dozen hits. One was a 9. None were bullseyes 🙂

That’s how we had fun. The mood was positive and good.

The weather also added to the special experience. Periodically, there were short but quite heavy showers. This made the atmosphere even more special.
